Birsa Munda led the Ulgulan — the "Great Tumult" — a millenarian tribal uprising against British land enclosure policies in the Chota Nagpur region, and was arrested in 1900 at age 25, dying in Ranchi jail within months under circumstances that remain disputed. This commemorative was issued for the 150th birth anniversary of a figure the Indian government has increasingly positioned as a founding-era resistance symbol, with November 15th — his birth date — declared Janjatiya Gaurav Divas in 2021.
The .9999 fineness is notably higher than most Indian state commemoratives, which have historically been struck in .500 silver.
