Additional information

Lala Lajpat Rai died in Lahore on November 17, 1928, eighteen days after being struck by police batons during a protest against the Simon Commission. The British government never formally prosecuted anyone. Bhagat Singh's subsequent assassination of a British police officer in retaliation, and his eventual execution, made Rai's death one of the most politically charged episodes of the independence movement.

The .500 fineness is characteristic of RBI commemorative rupee issues from this period — fine silver was reserved for earlier colonial-era coinage.
