Credito Italiano's assegni circolari — circular cheques with fixed denominations functioning as near-cash instruments — occupied an odd corner of Italian monetary practice. The 150 lire denomination reflects a specific mid-1970s problem: chronic coin shortages driven by inflation, hoarding, and the disappearance of small-denomination metal from circulation. Banks and large retailers issued these notes as substitutes, legally valid but technically obligations of the issuing institution rather than Banca d'Italia liabilities.
Officine Cartevalori Fratelli Pozzoni, based in Cisano Bergamasco, was one of several specialist security printers handling this unusual overflow work during the period.
