Italian fiduciary notes of this type — locally issued, privately printed, and redeemable only within a specific institution's network — proliferated in the mid-1970s as chronic small-coin shortages made ordinary retail transactions genuinely difficult. The Banca d'Italia had failed to keep fractional coinage in adequate supply, and savings banks across northern Italy stepped into the gap with their own emission authority under a 1975 emergency framework.
The 150 Lire denomination is itself an artifact of that chaos — an increment that would never exist under normal monetary conditions, calibrated to cover real transaction shortfalls rather than any conventional rounding scheme.
