The composition depicts Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, dressed in black with a red sash, and his lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch in yellow, leading a company of civic guards in dynamic motion against a dramatically lit, dark architectural background. Numerous armed militiamen, a small girl in golden dress, a drummer, and a dog are depicted in Rembrandt's characteristic chiaroscuro style. The image faithfully replicates the original masterpiece housed in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. |
