Canada's platinum bullion and collector coin program launched in 1988, making the Royal Canadian Mint one of the earliest sovereign mints to issue platinum coins as a formal series. The Peregrine Falcon issue belongs to the Birds of Prey series, which ran through the mid-1990s and is notable for having attracted serious collector demand alongside its bullion function — an unusual dual market for platinum of this period. The Peregrine itself had been removed from Canada's endangered species list only in the early 1990s following a decades-long recovery driven by captive breeding programs and the 1972 ban on DDT.
