Additional information

Issued to mark the arrival of the 15th century of the Islamic calendar — 1 Muharram 1401 AH fell on November 9, 1980 — this piece belongs to a wave of commemorative silver struck by Arab and Muslim states to observe the hijri millennium. Morocco's participation was politically deliberate: Hassan II cultivated his religious authority as Commander of the Faithful, and aligning the monarchy with a calendrical milestone of this magnitude reinforced that claim domestically at a moment when his rule faced ongoing pressure from both left and right.
