Additional information

El Salvador issued this piece to mark the Quinto Centenario — the 500th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 landfall — a commemoration that generated fierce political controversy across Latin America, where many governments and indigenous groups rejected the framing of "discovery" altogether. El Salvador pressed ahead with the official terminology despite the debate. The Banco Central de Reserva had issued commemorative silver in limited quantities before, but the 1992 quincentenary series represented one of the more substantial efforts in the country's modern numismatic program.
