Manuel Pinto de Fonseca, Grand Master from 1741 until his death in 1773, governed Malta at a moment of acute tension between the Order and the Papacy over jurisdictional privileges — a dispute that consumed much of his long administration. His coinage program was among the most prolific in the Order's history, partly a deliberate projection of institutional authority at a time when that authority was being challenged from Rome.
The 15 tarì denomination corresponds to half a scudo, a unit deeply embedded in the Order's internal fiscal accounting for hospitaller operations and naval provisioning at Valletta.
