Obverse description Draped bust of Ferdinand von Hompesch, 71st Grand Master of the Order of St. John, facing left, wearing an elaborately embroidered military uniform adorned with the eight-pointed Maltese Cross. The hair is rendered in fine engraved lines swept back from the forehead. The circular legend reads F·FERDINANDVS HOMPESCH M·M· (Magnus Magister), with a beaded or reeded border running along the coin's periphery.

Reverse description The quartered shield of the Order of St. John, surmounted by a princely crown topped with a cross, is displayed in the central field. The shield is encircled by a decorative wreath of laurel and oak branches, whose stems are tied at the base. The date 1798 is divided to either side of the crown at the top, and the denomination T. 15 appears within the field. The circular legend S·SEP·HIER· … HOSPITAL·ET, an abbreviated reference to the Order's full title as Hospitallers of Jerusalem, runs along the periphery with a reeded border.
