Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc was elected Grand Master in 1775 and proved to be among the most administratively capable the Order had seen in generations — he codified Maltese civil law and maintained the island's finances with unusual discipline. The 15 Tarì denomination was the Order's principal large silver coin, struck at Valletta's mint at a time when the Knights' political position in the Mediterranean was increasingly precarious, squeezed between Ottoman power to the east and a revolutionary France that would, within two decades, evict them entirely. De Rohan never saw that fall; he died in 1797, the year Napoleon set his sights on Malta.
