Additional information

Transnistria declared independence from Moldova in 1990 following a brief armed conflict in 1992 that left roughly 1,500 dead and the region effectively frozen as an unrecognized state backed by Russian troops. No UN member state recognizes Transnistrian sovereignty, yet the Transnistrian Republican Bank has issued gold coinage since the mid-1990s — legal tender within a territory that does not legally exist under international law.

At 156.4 grams of .999 gold, this is an unusually heavy commemorative for a microstate with a population under 500,000. Mintages for Transnistrian gold issues of this period are typically in the low hundreds.
