Issued to mark the fifteenth year of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's rule, which began with the 1970 palace coup in which he deposed his own father, Said bin Taimur, with British backing. Qaboos had been kept effectively under house arrest by his father for years before that overthrow. The anniversary series of which this piece forms part was struck in tiered weights and gold fineness across multiple denominations, with Fr#9c placing this specific variant within a defined emission.
