Obverse description The obverse is framed by ornate lateral borders with foliate and scroll motifs. At the centre top, the coat of arms of the Estado de Honduras — an all-seeing eye above a triangular mountain within a radiating glory — is enclosed by the circular legend ESTADO DE HONDURAS. The denomination VALE QUINCE PESOS appears in bold letterpress across the centre, above a handwritten location and the decree date Por el decreto de 19 de Julio de 1862. Three manuscript signatures appear at the foot, attributed to El Contador mayor, El Mtre. de hacienda, and El Tesorero gral., with a circular embossed seal to the left and a rectangular fiscal cachet to the upper right.

Comments

Honduras had no central bank in 1862 — the Estado de Honduras issued paper currency directly as a government function, making these notes instruments of the state treasury rather than any banking institution. The three manuscript signatures reflect the bureaucratic authentication process typical of Latin American fiscal paper of this period, where multiple officials co-signed to distribute accountability and reduce fraud.

The embossed seal was the primary anti-counterfeiting measure, a low-tech but legally significant device: its absence could invalidate a note entirely.
