Canada's lunar series for the domestic market launched in 1998, positioned to capture collector interest in Chinese-Canadian communities as well as the broader gift-coin market. The Year of the Ox pieces from 2009 were struck during a period when the Royal Canadian Mint was aggressively expanding its bullion and numismatic programs — a strategy that would culminate in the Mint's controversial 2013 loss of several hundred million dollars' worth of gold from its books.
Mintage on this issue was capped at 48,888 — the repeated eights a deliberate nod to the number's auspicious significance in Chinese tradition.
