Additional information

Perth Mint's lunar bullion series launched in 1996, making the 2001 Snake the sixth release in what is now recognized as Lunar Series I. Each year's issue was strictly limited and struck to the .9999 fineness standard that Perth had adopted to compete directly with the Royal Canadian Mint's Maple Leaf program. The Snake year mintage was capped at 30,000 pieces across all denominations — tighter than several adjacent years in the series.

Elizabeth II's fourth portrait, by Ian Rank-Broadley, had only entered circulation on Australian coinage in 1999.
