Reverse description A koala is depicted in a relaxed, resting pose facing left, rendered in fine detail with its distinctive textured fur, broad nose, and rounded ears rendered in high relief against a polished field. The arc legend DISCOVER AUSTRALIA appears along the upper periphery, while the lower field carries the inscriptions denoting the year of issue, species name, weight, fineness, and the Perth Mint's P mintmark. The overall composition evokes the naturalistic artistic style characteristic of the Discover Australia bullion series.

Additional information

Australia's gold koala bullion series launched in 1980 under the Australian Nugget banner before being rebranded and restructured in the early 2000s. The Perth Mint issues a new koala design each year, a deliberate policy distinguishing it from the Kangaroo series and driving collector demand beyond pure bullion buyers. Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, adopted by Australia in 1999, appeared on these fractional gold issues for just over a decade before Jody Clark's fifth portrait began its transition onto Australian coinage after 2015.
