Australia's .9999 fine gold standard was a deliberate commercial decision by the Perth Mint to outpace the Royal Canadian Mint's Maple Leaf, which had held the .9999 benchmark almost exclusively since 1982. The Koala bullion series launched in 2007 with an annually changing reverse design — a policy borrowed from the Lunar series — intended to drive collector demand on top of pure bullion premiums.
The 1/10 oz denomination within this series is among the more liquid fractional gold issues in the Asia-Pacific market, largely due to sustained demand from Japanese and Taiwanese retail bullion buyers throughout the late 2000s.
