Additional information

Australia's platinum koala series launched in 1987, making Perth one of the earliest sovereign mints to issue a bullion program in platinum rather than gold or silver. The fractional denominations — of which this is among the smallest — were added incrementally as the program matured, targeting collector-investors who wanted exposure to the metal without committing to the one-ounce price point. Platinum was trading near historic highs against gold in the early 1990s, briefly surpassing $500 USD per troy ounce in 1992.

The third portrait of Elizabeth II, by Raphael Maklouf, was retired after 1998.
