| Obverse description | The third effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, sculpted by Raphael Maklouf, faces right wearing the King George IV State Diadem, with a draped bust. The peripheral legend reads ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 15 DOLLARS, with the designer's initials RDM appearing below the portrait truncation. The design is set against a polished proof field. |

The Australian Nugget series launched in 1986 as Perth Mint's direct challenge to the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf in the international bullion market. The 1988 issues were among the first to carry Ian Rank-Broadley's third effigy of Elizabeth II, a portrait that would remain contentious within the Royal Mint's approval process before being formally adopted across Commonwealth issues. Perth's .9999 fineness — finer than the Krugerrand's .9167 — was a deliberate marketing point aimed at buyers in Asian markets, particularly Hong Kong and Japan, where purity premiums commanded real price differences.
