The Australian Nugget series launched in 1986 as a direct challenge to the South African Krugerrand, which was then facing international trade sanctions. Perth Mint positioned the series explicitly for the bullion investor market, but the 1987 proof issues were struck in limited numbers for collectors rather than as investment product. The 1/10 oz denomination — this piece — served the entry-level collector segment and saw considerably lower mintage pressure than the larger weights.
KM#95 corresponds to the first-year Nugget proof before Perth introduced annual design rotation in 1989, when different nugget specimens began cycling through the series each year.
