Torrebesses is a tiny municipality in the Segrià comarca of Lleida, Catalonia — population well under a thousand even today. This 15 céntimos note belongs to the wave of emergency fractional currency issued by Catalan municipal councils during the Spanish Civil War, when Republican-controlled areas faced an acute shortage of small coinage. Hundreds of councils printed their own, and Turró catalogues over two thousand distinct pieces from across the region.
The official stamp is the note's primary security measure — minimal even by wartime village standards, but typical of councils with no access to proper printing infrastructure.
