Cervià de les Garrigues is a small agricultural municipality in the Lleida province of Catalonia, and this 15 céntimos note is one of the emergency paper issues produced during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone faced an acute shortage of small metallic currency. Municipalities, cooperatives, and local committees across Catalonia printed their own fractional notes under authorization from the Generalitat de Catalunya — hundreds of distinct issuers, most producing only a handful of denominations in tiny quantities.
The 15 céntimos value is among the less common fractional units in the Catalan municipal series; 25, 50, and 1 peseta denominations account for the bulk of surviving local issues.
