Bellpuig is a small municipality in the Urgell comarca of Lleida, and this 15 céntimos note belongs to the vast wave of Spanish Civil War emergency paper money — locally issued vales and cartones — produced by hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns between 1936 and 1939 when metallic coin effectively vanished from circulation. The Republican government had requisitioned silver and copper for the war effort, and municipal councils were left to improvise.
At 53 × 34 mm, this is among the smallest paper denominations the crisis produced. Turró catalogs thousands of these issues; Bellpuig's entries are scarce enough that surviving examples in any condition draw attention.
