During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican government's collapse of normal supply chains forced individual military units and regional authorities to issue their own emergency currency. The Subsecretaría de Aviación's 3rd Air Region, headquartered in Barcelona's aviation infrastructure, produced this note in 1937 to cover small daily transactions among personnel when coinage had effectively vanished from circulation — hoarding and melting had stripped the Republic's copper and silver from everyday use within months of the July 1936 uprising.
These hyper-local military issues were rarely preserved intentionally. Most were spent into oblivion or rendered worthless within months as Republican monetary authority consolidated.
