Laos introduced a series of lunar zodiac commemoratives in the early 2000s primarily for the export collector market — these pieces were never intended for domestic circulation and saw essentially no use within the country. The program was administered through foreign minting arrangements, and distribution ran almost entirely through European and Asian numismatic dealers.
