Additional information

Nazım Hikmet Ran spent the better part of his adult life either in Turkish prisons or in Soviet exile — hardly the biography the Turkish state typically honors on its coinage. Convicted under laws targeting communist activity, he served nearly thirteen years before international pressure, including from Pablo Picasso and Paul Robeson, secured his release in 1950. He left Turkey immediately and never returned, dying in Moscow in 1963.

His appearance on a Turkish commemorative issue in 2004 reflects a decades-long, deeply contested rehabilitation — one that still had vocal opponents within Turkey at the time of striking.
