Obverse description Central field displays the crowned arms of Friesland — a quartered shield bearing two rows of rampant lions — surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is flanked by decorative foliate or floral ornaments on either side. The entire device is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads + MONETA × NOVA × ORDINVM × FRISIÆ, denoting the new coinage of the States of Friesland, struck in a typical late-Renaissance hammered style with characteristic irregular flan.
