Reverse description The central field depicts a portrait bust of Napoleon Bonaparte facing three-quarters right, superimposed over a stylized map of Europe rendered in low relief. To the left of the bust, a battle scene showing a horse-drawn cannon and military figures is depicted. The dates 1821 and 1996, commemorating the 175th anniversary of Napoleon's death, appear to the upper left. The denomination 14 ECUS is inscribed at the lower centre, and the legend NAPOLEON appears to the right of the portrait. Twelve stars of the European Community border the design, encircling the entire composition within a raised rim.
