Maroneia, the Thracian coastal city founded by Chian colonists, derived its early wealth from the wine trade — wine from the Maroneian region was considered exceptional enough that Homer referenced it in the Odyssey, where Maron's gift of wine to Odysseus comes from this precise locality. Bronze civic coinage of this period reflects the city's administrative confidence during a phase of relative autonomy before Macedonian pressure reshaped the northern Aegean political order in the latter half of the fourth century.
