Obverse description Forepart of a boar advancing to the right, rendered in archaic Greek style with bold, confident engraving. The animal's snout, eye, and ear are clearly delineated, with hatching visible along the dorsal ridge to suggest bristling fur. The boar's head occupies most of the flan, characteristic of the archaic coinage of the Cycladic islands. No inscription or legend is present in the field.

Additional information

Kythnos, a small Cycladic island with no major political allout and modest resources, nonetheless produced its own silver coinage in the early fifth century — a practice that required both a local silver supply and the civic apparatus to authorize and oversee striking. The island's mines, mentioned by ancient sources, were real but never prolific. That a fractional denomination was produced here at all suggests active local commerce rather than prestige minting.

The Traité reference places this among the earliest documented Kythniote issues, predating the Persian Wars' disruption of Aegean trade networks.
