Paramahansa Yogananda, born Mukunda Lal Ghosh in 1893, founded the Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles in 1920 and spent decades building one of the first sustained institutional bridges between Indian spiritual practice and Western audiences. His 1946 autobiography became a publishing phenomenon that has never gone out of print. India's commemorative coin program issued this piece in 2019 to mark the 125th anniversary of his birth — a milestone the government had already acknowledged through a postage stamp decades earlier.
The .500 fineness is characteristic of India's modern commemorative silver issues, which use that standard consistently across the denomination.
