The whooping crane's near-extinction is one of North America's most documented conservation crises — the wild population bottomed out at just 21 birds in 1941. Coordinated recovery efforts between Canadian and American wildlife agencies, including the long-running Aransas-Wood Buffalo migratory corridor program, brought numbers back from that threshold. By 2015, the wild flock had climbed past 300.
