Issued to mark the 180th anniversary of the Belgian dynasty, this small gold piece commemorates a royal house that began under peculiar circumstances — Léopold I accepted the Belgian crown only after it had already been refused by Louis de France, the Duke of Nemours, whose father Louis-Philippe feared the diplomatic fallout of placing a French prince on a newly independent throne. The coin pairs Albert II with his predecessor Baudouin I, who died unexpectedly in Spain in 1993, triggering a constitutional episode in which the entire Belgian parliament temporarily assumed royal prerogatives to pass an abortion law Baudouin had refused to sign.
