Obverse description Bare-headed left-facing portrait of King Amadeo I of Spain, his name and title inscribed in the legend surrounding the effigy reading AMADEO I REY DE ESPAÑA with the date 1871 in the exergue. Applied in the lower field of the host coin is a crowned oval countermark bearing the initials G.P., representing the Portuguese countermark applied in the Azores for revaluation purposes; this countermark is noted as a forgery in numismatic literature.
