Reverse description Central device depicts the Portuguese royal coat of arms superimposed upon an armillary sphere, the whole surrounded by crossed banners or standards in the field. The circular legend reads 'SUB Q SIGN NATA STAB' arranged around the periphery of the coin. This reverse design is characteristic of the Brazilian colonial 960 Réis coinage struck under João VI, here used as the host planchet for the Azorean countermark of 1887.
