Obverse description Draped bust of Empress Maria Theresa facing right, wearing a veil and jewelled bodice, with elaborately dressed hair. The circumferential legend reads R·IMP·HU·BO·REG· M·THERESIA· around the effigy. Prominently applied over the empress's bust is the Portuguese 'Big Crown' countermark of King Luís I — a deeply struck, raised depiction of a royal crown within an incuse cartouche — validating the host coin for circulation in the Azores at 1200 Réis.
