Obverse description Griffin seated to right in the field, with wings spread upward and forepaws resting on the ground, rendered in high relief with fine archaic detailing. The creature's feathered body and raised wing tips are executed with considerable artistic skill typical of Abderan coinage of the late fifth to early fourth century BC. The ethnic legend ΑΒΔΗΡΙΤΕΩΝ is disposed around the periphery of the flan in Greek characters.
