| Obverse description | Crowned and draped bust of Charles I facing left, rendered in the refined medallic style characteristic of Nicholas Briot's engraving. The king wears an ornate crown and flowing hair to the shoulders, with armoured drapery visible at the truncation. The denomination numeral XII appears to the right of the effigy in the field. The circular legend, separated from the inner field by a beaded border, reads CAR · D : G · MAG · BRITAN · FR · ET · HIB · REX ·, proclaiming Charles as King of Great Britain, France and Ireland by the Grace of God. |

| Reverse description | A quartered royal shield of arms, surmounted by a closed imperial crown, occupies the centre of the reverse. The quarters display the arms of England (lions passant guardant), Scotland (lion rampant), France (fleurs-de-lis), and Ireland (harp), with the crowned initials C and R flanking the shield to left and right respectively. The whole is set within a beaded inner circle, with the Latin legend QVÆ · DEVS : CONIVNXIT · NEMO · SEPARET · running around the outer field, a biblical motto meaning 'What God hath joined together, let no man put asunder.' |
