| Reverse description | Central device featuring an armillary sphere (esfera armilar), the dynastic emblem of the Portuguese Crown, struck in a large format as characteristic of the João VI 'Big armillary sphere' variety (Gomes J6.08). The sphere is rendered with broad, bold strokes consistent with the hammered technique and the coarse engraving style of the Goa mint. The field surrounding the device is plain, and the flan edges are irregular. This reverse type distinguishes the issue from the contemporary 'Small armillary sphere' variety (Gomes J6.25). |
