Additional information

John Frederick ruled Calenberg from 1665 until his death in 1679, and his coinage reflects the fractured monetary landscape — in the strictest geographic sense — of the post-Westphalian German states, where each principality retained the right to strike independently under the Reichsmünzordnung. The 12 Mariengroschen denomination was peculiar to the Brunswick territories, valued at roughly half a Thaler and widely used in regional trade along the Weser corridor.

John Frederick was notably the first of his line to convert to Catholicism, a politically charged move in a staunchly Lutheran principality that created lasting friction with the Estates.
