Obverse description Central field occupied by the crowned Portuguese royal arms, featuring the traditional escutcheon with the cross of five bezants (quinas) at center, flanked by decorative mantling with floral sprays at either side. The shield is surmounted by a large royal crown rendered in high relief. A continuous Latin legend encircles the design along the milled border, reading the joint regnal titles of Maria I and Pedro III.

Reverse description Denomination inscription MACUTAS / 12 displayed in two lines at center of the field, enclosed within a laurel and oak wreath tied at the base with a ribbon bow. The date 1783 appears above the wreath at the top of the field. The circumferential legend AFRICA·PORTUGUEZA reads around the periphery, flanked by small floral ornaments, all within a milled border.
