Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal arms, featuring the traditional escutcheon with five quinas in cross arrangement on a horizontally striped field, enclosed within an ornate baroque cartouche with scrollwork supporters. The royal crown surmounts the shield at the top of the design. The circular legend reads MARIA·I·D·G·REGINAE·PORT·ET·D·GUINEÆ·, identifying Queen Maria I of Portugal and Guinea, separated by decorative floral rosette stops. The coin's milled border is visible at the periphery.
