| Obverse description | Two archaic Chinese characters, reading 半兩 (Ban Liang, meaning 'half ounce'), arranged horizontally and read from right to left flanking the central square hole. The characters are cast in raised relief within a plain, unadorned field, rendered in the seal-script (zhuanshu) style characteristic of the Western Han dynasty. At least one horizontal line appears above the inscription, a diagnostic feature distinguishing the Type 4 variety. The overall fabric is typical of Han cast coinage, with a broad, flat rim and a prominent square central perforation. |
