Obverse description Central field occupied by an indented or notched shield bearing the arms of Hagenau — a large five-petalled rose with a central pellet, rendered in relief against the shield's surface. The shield is set within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads MONETA NOVA CIV HAGENAV, divided by the shield, with the inscription running clockwise in Latin capitals. The overall style is characteristic of late seventeenth-century German municipal hammered coinage.

On the eagle's breast is affixed an escutcheon bearing the Austrian arms. The denomination numeral XII appears prominently above the eagle's heads within the crown. The surrounding circular legend reads LEOPOLD D G ROM IMP S A in Latin capitals within a beaded border, identifying Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I as the overlord under whose authority the coinage was struck.
