Hagenau's 12 Kreuzer issues of the 1660s were struck under the complicated jurisdictional reality that followed the Peace of Westphalia — the city nominally retained its Free Imperial status while French influence over Alsace tightened steadily around it. Within two decades, Louis XIV would formally absorb the city, ending its independent coinage entirely. The 1665 date sits near the close of a very short municipal minting window.
KM#53 is among the scarcer city issues from this terminal phase of Hagenau's autonomy.
