Obverse description Cast silver coin featuring a central square perforation surrounded by four large Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within a broad, plain field. The four-character reign inscription 嗣德通寶 (Tự Đức Thông Bảo) reads top-to-bottom and right-to-left in the traditional manner, rendered in bold relief with characteristic Vietnamese cast workmanship. The characters are deeply struck with clean strokes against a flat, unadorned field. A raised inner rim frames the central aperture, and a plain outer border encircles the entire design. The overall style is consistent with mid-nineteenth-century Nguyễn dynasty cast coinage.
