Obverse description Facing Imperial double-headed eagle with spread wings displayed, each head crowned, surmounted by a central imperial orb above a shield on the breast bearing the arms of Lübeck. The design is boldly struck in the hammered tradition of early seventeenth-century German coinage. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the outer legend. The Latin legend runs continuously around the periphery in capital letters: ADVERSVS. HOSTES. NVLLA - PRÆTEREVNDA. EST. OCCASIO. (Against enemies, no opportunity is to be missed).

Reverse description Standing full-length figure of Saint John the Evangelist, the patron saint of Lübeck, depicted facing forward, nimbed with a halo, draped in long robes, holding a book of the Gospels in his right hand and a palm frond in his left. The figure is rendered in the bold, slightly archaic Gothic-influenced style characteristic of Lübeck coinage of this period. An ornate beaded inner circle frames the central device, while the surrounding Latin legend reads: MEDIOCRITAS. IN. OMNI - RE. EST. OPTIMA. (Moderation in all things is best), separated by decorative stops.
