| Reverse description | The central device consists of the numeral 1-1/2 set within a large ornate quatrefoil composed of four interlocking C-scrolls, each terminating in a pellet or trefoil ornament, creating an elaborate decorative frame around the denomination. The circumferential legend, interrupted by cross ornaments, reads + 1688 + QUARTO + ANNO + REGNI, denoting the fourth year of the reign of Pedro II. The date 1688 appears prominently at the top of the legend. The overall composition is characteristic of Portuguese pattern coinage of the late seventeenth century, with the scrollwork providing a distinctly baroque aesthetic. |
