The circumferential legend, interrupted by cross ornaments, reads + 1688 + QUARTO + ANNO + REGNI, denoting the fourth year of the reign of Pedro II. The date 1688 appears prominently at the top of the legend. The overall composition is characteristic of Portuguese pattern coinage of the late seventeenth century, with the scrollwork providing a distinctly baroque aesthetic. |
