| Additional information |
Leopold V, Duke of Austria, is best remembered in monetary history for holding Richard I of England to ransom in 1192 — a captivity that lasted over a year and generated a ransom of 150,000 marks of silver, roughly three times the annual revenue of the English crown. The Austrian Mint's long-running "House of Austria" series uses figures like Leopold to anchor the institution's own medieval origins, the Vienna mint having operated continuously since the twelfth century.
The .9999 fineness is notably purer than the .999 standard common to most silver bullion issues.
